Below we’ve outlined our process for stained glass restoration.
Our Remodeling & Renovation Process
Remodeling and renovation stained glass is an art in itself. Certain measures have to be taken in order to ensure that the glass remains safe throughout the process and looks beautiful once the restoration is complete. That’s why we use the method described below for all of our renovations.
Step #1: Removal
The stained glass is very gently and carefully removed from the wall. Then, it’s taken to our studio where we can focus on the restoration process. In the meantime, we install a piece of temporary glass in your window to keep your building secure and protected from the elements.
Step #2: Cleaning
The next step is to clean all of the dirt, soot, and grime off of the windows. This helps to restore their color and shine and also makes taking them apart much easier. The panel is soak in a bath of gentle cleansing solution for up to 14 days.
Step #3: Disassembly
Once the glass has been cleaned, it’s time to take the panel apart. First we take a photograph of the original design which may be used to refer back to. Then the individual pieces of glass are removed one at a time, numbered, and set aside.
Step #4: Replacement
Next, it’s time to take care of the broken pieces of glass. The glass that is in good, usable condition is set aside and stored in a safe place. All pieces that have been badly broken or damaged are changed out with matching colored glass from our stockpile.
Step #5: Reassembly
Finally the panel is pieced back together. The old leading is discarded and replaced with new leading of a similar profile. Thin black cement is poured over the window for aesthetics and extra reinforcement. Steel bars may also be added for additional support.
Step #6: Installation
The panel is brought back to its original site where it is reinstalled. If the owner chooses, we will also fit a piece of low-e safety glass over the panel in order to protect it from weather and accidental breakage. The window will retain its renewed brilliance and shine for another 100 years.
